Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Featured in a Sunday Times article , Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important cities of Galicia, and has become one of the main centres of Christian pilgrimages since remains were found in the 9th century which many believe were of St James, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ.

Visitors are attracted to this small city (declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its cathedral) its old city centre and its religious tradition. It’s packed with interesting places and museums to visit – and you can get anywhere by walking. The Cathedral in Plaza del Obradoiro is top of the list with its mixture of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. Join with or watch the Pilgrims Mass at midday, see the saint’s casket in the crypt or take a tour of the Cathedral’s roof.  No shortage of restaurants offering Galician delicacies and plenty of Tapas bars in the old town.

Drive to Fisterra, about an hour away and enjoy a seafood meal in the pretty harbour and return on one of the world’s most stunning coastal routes, with mountains on one side and the Atlantic the other
For the energetic, see Santiago from Monte do Gozo, a hill from which Pilgrims walking the route first see the Cathedral.
