Twelve Apostles - VictoriaThe crown jewel of the famous Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles are one of Australia’s most stunning landmarks. This is quite a feat, given the plethora of fantastic geographical features which permeate the Australian Outback. The Apostles are the result of millions of years of coastal erosion, which formed some of the most impressive and prominent limestone stacks in the world. While once there were twelve now only seven remain, the last falling in just 2005. The remaining Apostles still stand proudly off the coast of Port Campbell National Park, which both benefit from each other’s close proximity. Take a walk down the Gibson steps to the gorgeous beach down below to fully appreciate the size of the huge stacks and experience the power of the waves which continuously hammer the Apostles. Truly one of Australia’s greatest features, visit at sunset to see the stacks change colour from a sandy yellow to jet black in the growing shade.
Where is it?The Apostles are situated on the south coast of Australia, to the west of Melbourne City. The stacks are roughly half way along the stunning Great Ocean Road.
What is it? The twelve stacks are the product of millions of years of coastal erosion, as the Southern Ocean eroded the soft limestone cliffs to form caves and then the stacks which remain today.
Best time to visit?Between March and May is the best time to visit the south coast, as this avoids the scorching summer months and droves of tourists. Even in the summer though, the extreme coastal location means the Apostles remain a breezy visit whenever you decide to travel there.
Must See?Take the 86 Gibson steps down to the beautiful beach below to be towered over by the 70-metre high vertical limestone cliffs. At the bottom you can walk along the beach to the enormous stacks Gog and MaGog, to truly witness the size of these wonders.
