If you were asked to name one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, chances are the Great Pyramid of Giza would be top of the list.
Not only is it the oldest of the seven wonders, it is the only one of these incredible feats of human endeavour that remains largely intact. Built more than 4,500 years ago, the Great Pyramid stands 140 metres high and its construction still holds many mysteries to this day.
Along with several smaller pyramids and tombs, the Giza site is also the location of the Great Sphinx, a giant limestone statue of a mythical beast with a lion's head and a human body, a truly spectacular sight under the beating Egyptian sun that lives long in the memory. This archaeological treasure trove is undoubtedly one of the 'must-see' destinations for culturally conscious globetrotters.
Where is it?
Giza is an area on the west bank of the River Nile, to the west of the sprawling urban areas of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
What is it?
Giza is a desert plateau that contains some of the most significant archaeological discoveries in history, including the last intact wonder of the ancient world.
Best time to visit?
The temperature is a major factor to consider when visiting Giza, as the summer months can be unbearably hot. October to April is more comfortable, especially if you plan to go inside some of the tombs.
The Great Pyramid is difficult to miss and the Sphinx is very likely to be ticked off straight away, so find a good guide to show you around the rest of the sights of Giza and prepare to be amazed!
