Amber Fort - IndiaOne of India’s most beloved jewels, Amber Fort is a stunning fort-palace complex in the renowned Rajasthan state in India. Sitting atop the rocky crag of Cheel ka Teela (The Hill of Eagles) and overlooking the lovely Maota Lake, this wonderful site is a unique blend of Hindu and Rajput elements. Visitors can arrive in true Maharaja style by taking an unforgettable Elephant ride to the main courtyard, before exploring the fascinating palace’s various structures. The Sheesh Mahal (The Mirror Palace) is the fort’s most stunning feature. Its carved marble walls are covered in captivating paintings and flowers constructed of glass, and the chambers roof is made of thousands of tiny mirrors, which are said to light the entire room with just a single candle. There are four main courtyards in Amber fort, one of which houses the Diwan-i-Am (The Hall of Public Audience) whose columns and latticed galleries were once the site where residents used to speak to the reigning king. Amber Fort is one of the best maintained and most attractive sites that reveal India’s captivating past.
Where is it? Amber Fort is located in the small town of Amer in the Indian state of Rajasthan, around 11km from the famous pink city, Jaipur.
What is it? Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site of India, the Fort was built by Raja Maan Singh I in 1592. It is constructed of white and red sandstone, and was the citadel of Maharaja JaiSingh II, whose Kucchwahas clan ruled Rajasthan for over 150 years.
Best time to visit?It is definitely advisable to visit Amber Fort in the winter months, from October to February, as the site is highly susceptible to the blistering Indian summer given its lofty, exposed position.
Must See?Just before the entrance to the Palace lies the Shila Devi Temple. This pretty ancient temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, is renowned for its striking silver adornments, including gates and spectacular lions. It also has an image of Lord Ganesha on the doorway that is impressively carved from a single piece of coral.
