Whistler - Canada
The Mecca of skiing, Whistler is home to one of the best loved and most spectacular skiing resorts in the world. Home to many of the 2010 Winter Olympics events, Whistler is home to the largest ski area in North America and is situated conveniently close to Vancouver. The alpine village sits in the shadow of the impressive Blackcomb and Whistler mountains. There are 38 lifts to over 200 different runs, making it one of the most varying and exciting places to glide down and gaze at the wondrous surroundings of white-peaked mountains and mirror-glass lakes. The Mountain Bike Park is similarly loved by supporters of that exhilarating activity, with 200 km of bridges, jumps and beams cutting through the mountainous alpine forest. The Lost Lake is a typically beautiful Canadian feature, with a beach and miles of trails through the valleys perfect for hiking or cycling. Golf is also increasingly popular in the area, in particular a course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

Where is it?
Whistler is in British Columbia, on the north edge of the Garibaldi Provincial Park. It is usefully close to the lovely city of Vancouver, and is hugely popular with the locals of the city.

What is it?
Originally a small logging village, Whistler has grown into one of Canada’s premium skiing hotspots. Its impressive slopes on the Fitzsimmons mountain range led to it hosting much of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Best time to visit?
January and February are the most consistent times for skiing, with generally fantastic snowfall. June through to September brings more moderate temperatures, ideal for hiking, cycling and exploring.

Must See?
Away from the mountains, see the quaint Whistler Museum to learn the full story of how this tiny wilderness village became such a huge tourist destination. You can even get your hands on one of the 2010 Olympic torches!
